Although inspired by Bosch's style and the fantastic imagery of his Last Judgment triptych, now in the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna, the Antwerp-based painter of this large panel invented details such as the giant submerged head in Hell, as well as the fountain of life and perhaps the tree of life with an infant below it in Paradise. Christ's raised hand symbolizes his judgment. The lily beside his raised hand grants salvation, while his lowered hand and the sword signify damnation.
